The Astrology Houses Explained & How to Use Them to Enhance Your Alignment

As a practitioner who implements spiritual elements, such as astrology, one of the questions I get asked most is: WTF are the houses?

I get it.

It took me a while to understand what they were and how to use them. Below I'm going to break it down for you and teach you my formula so you can use current astrology transit energy to it highest potential. If you don't know your Houses, you can calculate them for free HERE.

The twelve houses represent different areas of life: identity, money, communication, home, relationships, career, community, and more. They help show where the energy of a planet or transit may express itself.

Imagine your birth chart as one large house containing twelve rooms. Each room has a different purpose. The sign connected to a room describes its style, while any planets inside it show the energies active there.

In short:

Planets show what is happening.
Signs describe how it happens.
Houses show where it happens.

For example, Taurus on your seventh house may bring Taurus qualities (loyalty, stability, sensuality, and patience) into committed relationships. Leo on your tenth house may suggest a visible or creative approach to career, reputation, and leadership.

The Twelve Houses and Their Adjacent "Rooms"

First House: The Entryway: Self and Identity

Identity, appearance, temperament, vitality, first impressions, personal style, and how you approach life.

Second House: The Treasury: Money and Values

Income, possessions, material security, personal resources, talents, self-worth, and values.

Third House: The Library: Communication and Everyday Learning

Communication, thinking, writing, early education, siblings, neighbors, short trips, and your immediate environment.

Fourth House: The Kitchen: Home and Roots

Home, family, ancestry, caregivers, emotional foundations, privacy, real estate, and your sense of belonging.

Fifth House: The Playroom: Creativity and Pleasure

Creativity, romance, dating, play, pleasure, self-expression, children, and the inner child.

Sixth House: The Workshop: Work and Well-Being

Daily routines, work, service, coworkers or employees, health habits, maintenance, responsibilities, and pets.

Seventh House: The Partnership Room: One-to-One Relationships

Marriage, committed relationships, business partners, contracts, collaboration, negotiation, and open conflict.

Eighth House: The Vault: Intimacy and Shared Resources

Intimacy, trust, shared finances, debt, taxes, inheritance, psychological depth, loss, transformation, and other people’s resources.

Ninth House: The Study: Meaning and Exploration

Higher education, philosophy, religion, spirituality, publishing, law, long-distance travel, cultural exploration, and the search for meaning.

Tenth House: The Office: Career and Public Life

Career, vocation, ambition, reputation, achievement, authority, leadership, and your public role.

Eleventh House: The Community Room: Friends and Future Goals

Friendships, groups, networks, community, supporters, collective causes, hopes, and long-term aspirations.

Twelfth House: The Retreat: Solitude and the Unseen

Rest, retreat, solitude, spirituality, dreams, the unconscious, hidden matters, endings, confinement, release, and self-undoing.

How Signs and Planets Affect a House

A sign on a house describes how you approach that area of life. A planet in a house shows a particular need, drive, or function operating there.

You can also have several planets in one house. Think of them as sharing the same room: each planet has its own agenda, and their relationships with one another affect how comfortably (or dramatically) they coexist.

For example, if your Sun, Mercury, Lilith, and North Node are all in Virgo in the eleventh house, Virgo qualities such as discernment, organization, improvement, and service may strongly shape your friendships, communities, and long-term goals. Each placement still means something different, so the full interpretation depends on the entire chart.

What Do the Aspects/Degrees Mean?

Aspects are the angles a current transit makes to the planets and points in your birth chart.

The major aspects include conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines, and sextiles.

Conjunctions merge energies, oppositions create tension or invite balance, squares encourage growth through challenges, trines offer ease and flow, and sextiles present supportive opportunities.

The closer the transit is to the exact degree of your natal placement, the more strongly you may feel it.

How to Apply Aspects and Degrees

First, find the exact sign and degree of the transit, then compare it with the degrees of your natal planets and chart points. The signs reveal the type of aspect, while the degrees reveal how close, or exact, the connection is.

For a beginner-friendly guide, look for natal placements within about 3° of the transit:

Same sign and degree = conjunction
Opposite sign and same degree = opposition
Three signs apart and same degree = square
Four signs apart and same degree = trine
Two signs apart and same degree = sextile

For example, imagine a full moon at 20° Scorpio. A natal Venus between approximately 17° and 23° Scorpio would be conjunct the full moon, while Venus between 17° and 23° Taurus would be opposite it. Venus near 20° Leo or Aquarius would form a square, Venus near 20° Cancer or Pisces would form a trine, and Venus near 20° Virgo or Capricorn would form a sextile.

For example:

If a full moon occurs at 20° Scorpio and your natal Venus is at 20° Scorpio, the full moon is conjunct your Venus. This may bring a culmination, revelation, or emotional turning point involving Venus themes such as relationships, values, money, pleasure, or self-worth. If your Venus were at 20° Leo instead, the full moon would square it, potentially bringing friction or a challenge that asks you to address those themes differently.

How Transits Activate Your Houses

When a planet moves through the sky, it travels through a house in your birth chart. That house describes the area of life being activated.

My formula for working with this energy is:

Transit + sign of the transit + natal house activated + aspects to natal placements = the themes receiving attention

For example, a Scorpio full moon always occurs opposite the Sun in Taurus. If Scorpio is your first house and Taurus is your seventh house, the full moon activates your first/seventh-house axis: self versus partnership, independence versus compromise, and personal needs versus relationship needs.

If the full moon also closely contacts your natal Venus or Mars, themes involving love, values, attraction, motivation, anger, or desire may become more personally significant. Sharing the same sign alone does not guarantee an equally strong effect: the closeness of the degrees and the aspects involved matter too.

Then combine the pieces:

The transit describes what is happening + the activated house shows where it is happening + the natal planet shows which personal theme is involved + the aspect describes how the energies interact.

If the Scorpio full moon falls in your first house and squares your natal Venus in the tenth house, it may highlight tension between your identity or personal needs and Venus-related themes in your career, reputation, relationships, values, or finances. The closer the degrees, the stronger the aspect is generally considered. Because a full moon includes both the Moon and the opposing Sun, check whether either side makes a close aspect to your natal chart.

Your rising sign can help you locate the houses when using Whole Sign houses. In other house systems, signs and houses may not line up perfectly, so always check the actual house cusps and planetary degrees in your chart. Once you understand the houses, astrology becomes much easier to personalize.

Instead of asking only, “What does this full moon mean?” you can ask, “Which part of my chart, and which part of my life, is it activating?”

Honestly, the aspects can feel very nitty-gritty in astrology, and you do not have to deep dive into it if you choose not to.

If you're just starting out, I'd focus on learning what your houses (rooms) are and just begin noticing, and maybe even journaling, around how you're feeling/thinking/ themes you're moving through during the New Moon and Full Moon.
