Yoni Steaming: Ritual, Womb Connection & Returning to the Body

One of my feminine embodiment practices, and one I'm asked about most frequently, is the art of yoni steaming.
There is something profoundly restorative about intentionally slowing down and offering warmth, presence, and care to your body.
For centuries, women across various cultures have practiced forms of pelvic or vaginal steaming as part of postpartum care, menstrual rituals, and feminine wellness traditions.
Today, yoni steaming has found a place within many spiritual and embodiment practices because it offers an opportunity to cultivate a relationship with your yoni/vulva and give her some intentional attention in a modern culture that does not prioritize this kind of self care.
Within Empress Embodiment, I see yoni steaming first and foremost as a ritual of presence. The benefits and healing properties of the herbs is another added bonus.
What Is Yoni Steaming?
Yoni steaming (sometimes called vaginal steaming or pelvic steaming) involves sitting above a bowl or pot of warm water that has been infused with herbs, allowing gentle warmth to reach the external vulva. Many women choose to wrap themselves in a blanket or towel while they sit quietly for 15–30 minutes, creating a cozy, meditative experience.
Some women use a large pot at home, while others invest in specially designed steam seats or "yoni thrones" that make the ritual more comfortable. Regardless of the setup, comfort and safety should always come before intensity. The steam should feel pleasantly warm, not hot, and should never cause discomfort or burns.

The Ritual Can Be the Medicine
One of the reasons this practice resonates with so many women has very little to do with steam itself.
It's the permission to stop. Rest. Unplug. Practice deep breathing, stretching, and notice what your body has been carrying.
Personally, I’ve found it to be a helpful practice to ease menstrual cramps and also heal my cervix after my IUD removal. For a few weeks after removal, I noticed cervical pain during sex. Once I began weekly yoni steaming, the pain has been eliminated and my connection to my vulva and pleasure has also deepened.
I also recommend yoni steaming after a breakup or disconnecting from a sexual partner. It's a beautiful practice to energetically release any attachments or karma from your body.
In addition, our pelvic floor is deeply involved in breathing, posture, movement, and emotional responses to stress. Whether or not steaming itself changes the body in measurable ways, creating intentional space to relax those muscles, breathe deeply, and soften your nervous system can be profoundly restorative.
As you sit, you might gently ask yourself:
What tension am I ready to soften?
What am I carrying that no longer belongs to me?
Where have I been disconnected from my body?
What would it feel like to trust my body a little more today?
What touch/massage sensations feel good today?
Just giving yourself permission to tune into your body is a healing ritual in and of itself.
Note: this is my own personal experience and not medical advice.
Stop yoni steaming if you notice an adverse reaction.
Frequency & Cycle Syncing
It’s recommended that you yoni steam on a weekly basis, skipping the days of your menstrual bleed. I often try to time my steams for the day before I bleed and the day my cycle concludes.
You can also steam after a sexual encounter to clear any karma or semen, although do not rely on yoni steaming as a form of birth control. It’s merely a way to reclaim your connection to your yoni and help restore your natural PH balance.
I personally find yoni steaming before sex is a great way to relax and increase blood flow to my vulva; it also increases sensitivity and sexual pleasure.
Do not yoni steam while pregnant!
Do not yoni steam immediately after giving birth; wait at least 2-3 weeks, listening to your body.
Recommended Herbs
I personally enjoy infusing my yoni steaming sessions with herbs. Below is a recommendation list and their herbal benefits and symbolism. Begin using 1-2 herbs at a time to test your body’s reaction. I also advise rubbing the herb on an area of test skin to insure you’re not allergic. Cease use of any herbs that give you an irritated sensation. Once you find the herbs you enjoy, you can create intuitive blends for each steaming session depending on your intentions or needs.
Recommended herbs I’ve personally used:
Rose petals: tones vagina, antiinflammatory, and boosts self-love
Red raspberry leaf: tones & nourishes uterus, supports fertility
Motherwort: soothes uterus, relieves fatigue & cramps
Mugwort: eases menstrual cramps, boosts circulation, promotes suppressed menses
Cat’s claw: can help ease endometriosis, cysts, HPV symptoms, and boosts immune system
Yarrow: regulates flow, antibacterial, and supports uterine health
Lavendar: relaxes mind and body
Calendula: aids in healing, antiinflammatory, detoxifying
Note: ALWAYS make sure your herbs are food-grade/ & USDA certified organic! Do not use herbs or plants that have been treated with pesticides (like grocery store rose petals).
I’m always exploring new herbs and will periodically add to this list over time. Return here for edits/updates.
Your Womb Does Not Need to Be "Detoxed"
One thing I feel strongly about is the language we use around women's bodies.
The vagina is an incredible self-regulating ecosystem. It doesn't need to be "cleansed" or "purified" in order to become worthy. Your body’s fluids, scent, and state are all natural and sexy. Yoni steaming is a self-love practice, not one to “fix” anything you may critique about your body. Be kind and gentle to yourself.

Creating Your Own Ritual
If you decide to explore yoni steaming, consider treating it less like a treatment and more like a ceremony.
Dim the lights.
Play calming music.
Light a candle.
Have crystals nearby (I recommend carnealian or any orange crystal for the sacral chakra, and rose quartz for self love).
Prepare a cup of herbal tea, blue lotus tea, or ceremonial cacao.
Journal afterward.
Meditate.
Practice yin yoga.
Pull tarot or oracle cards.
Rest one hand over your heart and the other over your lower abdomen.
Let the experience become less about "doing" something to your body and more about listening to it.
Here is a poem I wrote in devotion to my yoni, from my book, Alchemy & Passion.

Safety Matters
The tissue of the vulva is delicate, and steam that feels comfortable elsewhere on the body may still be too hot for intimate skin. Always test the temperature carefully and allow the water to cool before beginning.
Yoni steaming should be avoided if you are:
Pregnant.
Experiencing active vaginal infections, sores, or unexplained symptoms.
Immediately after certain gynecological procedures unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.
Experiencing significant irritation or discomfort.
If you use an IUD or have questions about whether steaming is appropriate for you, consult your gynecologist before trying the practice. Claims that steaming can dislodge an IUD have not been well studied, so it's best to seek individualized medical guidance rather than rely on anecdotal reports.
Most importantly, yoni steaming should never replace medical care for pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, infections, fertility concerns, or other reproductive health conditions.

The Empress Embodiment Perspective
Feminine embodiment isn’t about turning self-care into another to-do list, but rather prioritizing practices that build the relationship you have with your pleasure.
Self-care that is rooted in answering a need instead of fulfilling an obligation deeply honors yourself. Listen to your body, your womb, your yoni/vulva, and allow yourself to be present to your needs. You deserve it!
Deepen Your Connection to Your Womb
Your womb is more than a physical space: it can also be a powerful symbol of creativity, intuition, pleasure, and feminine wisdom. Whether you're seeking to reconnect with your body, explore your relationship with your femininity, or release emotional patterns you've been carrying, you deserve a sacred space to explore it all.
Through my Empress Embodiment Womb Healing Sessions, I offer a nurturing, intentional space for self-exploration, emotional processing, and deeper connection with your body through holistic embodiment practices.
